I am excited to be starting in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering as a Senior Lecturer in Fall 2023. In this new role, I hope to connect with even more students who are intersted in pursuing careers in the biopharmaceutical and health-focused industries. I am grateful for my 7 years in chemical engineering and look forward to new challenges and opportunities that Bioengineering has to offer.
You can find me in 4124 A. James Clark Hall. I was happy to share my poster, "Incorporation of Simulated and Hands-on Biopharmaceutical R&D Experiences in an Engineering Elective Course" at the Innovations in Teaching & Learning (ITL) conference at the University of Maryland, College Park on May 12, 2023. The poster shares the results of my year long $20,000 UMD Experiential Learing Grant where I developed and incorported simulated industry experiences, virtual laboratory exercises, and hands-on laboratory exercises in my Biopharmaceutical Process Development elective. Special thanks to the three undergraduate students who assisted me with developing the virtual and hands-on laboratory exercises: Lena Akil, Laura Marhefka, and Eric Werbitsky.
I was thrilled to serve as the guest speaker for the Society of Women Engineer's Discover Engineering Maryland Day program. I kicked off the program, designed to help high school students learn more about engineering, by sharing my own journey through engineering and encouraging students to envision what their journeys might look like. I was excited to share many photos of my current students exploring engineering through internships and clubs. It was great to see so many high school students excited about engineering!
I'm excited to share that I was awarded a $20,000 UMD Teaching and Learning grant to develop and incorporate experiential learning elements into my elective course Biopharmaceutical Process Development and Manufacturing (CHBE474/ BIOE489T/ CHBE674). I will be implementing the experiential learning elements throughout the academic year including "Simulated Industry Experiences" in Fall 2022 and virtual and hands-on laboratory experiments in Spring 2023. On May 15th, we had our first annual CHBE Fun Run/Walk! CHBE undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty gathered to run or walk on the Paint Branch trail to take a break from the stress of final exams and the end of the semester. Thanks to those who participated in this fun event!
On May 11th, I presented the results of my CHBE410 Course Redesign as part of the University of Maryland Innovations and Teaching and Learning Conference. The abstract and link to the presentation slides are provided below.
Redesigning a Chemical Engineering Statistics Course to Reduce Observed Achievement Gap DEBORAH GOLDBERG, SENIOR LECTURER, ENGRLearn about a course redesign aimed at reducing the achievement gap between students of disparate academic preparation in a chemical engineering statistics course. The course was redesigned through supplemental example videos and incorporation of weekly in-class active learning exercises. During the redesigned course offering in Fall 2020, there was no longer a statistically significant difference in final grades, indicating success of the redesign objectives. Presentation slides I have been asked to serve as the Associate Chair for Strategic Initiatives for the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In this role, I will be developing and implementing programs and events to support all constituencies in the department- faculty, staff, undergraduate students and graduate students- with a special emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. I am excited for the new role and look forward to working with the strategic initiatives committee to build a stronger and more inclusive department!
